Find answers to common questions about Who's Hungry. Learn why it works, how to use it, and get the help you need.
If you've ever spent 20 minutes arguing about where to eat, you need Who's Hungry.
The problem: Everyone has different tastes. One person loves Thai, another hates spicy food. Someone wants pizza, but you had that yesterday. The usual solution? Endless back-and-forth, veto after veto, until someone gives up.
The solution: Who's Hungry combines everyone's taste profiles mathematically. No more arguments, no more compromise. Find restaurants that actually make everyone happy.
Perfect for:
Google Maps shows you all the restaurants. Who's Hungry shows you the right ones.
Google Maps: You search "restaurants near me" and get 500 results with no way to filter by what you actually like.
Who's Hungry (solo): Even searching by yourself, we pull forward restaurants for cuisines we already know you love — based on your taste profile. No more scrolling past places you'd never pick.
Who's Hungry (group): This is where the real magic happens. When you search with fellow diners, the algorithm combines multiple taste profiles to surface restaurants that everyone will enjoy — not just a compromise, but a genuine group match.
We do our best to classify each restaurant by cuisine, but with thousands of places we can't get everything perfect. If you spot something wrong, tap the tag icon on any restaurant to suggest a correction — we review every submission and appreciate your help!
Plus, we show information you can't get anywhere else:
All this information is visible right in the search results — no clicking through to restaurant pages to figure out basic details.
The fanciness scale (◆ to ◆◆◆◆◆) tells you the dress code and atmosphere level of a restaurant — crucial information that's hard to find elsewhere.
The problem we solved: Google only shows price levels ($ to $$$$), but that doesn't tell you if it's casual or formal. A $$$ steakhouse might require a jacket, while a $$$ ramen place is jeans-and-t-shirt casual.
Our solution: Crowd-sourced fanciness ratings from real users:
Users can suggest corrections if they disagree, keeping the data accurate and community-driven.
Service type tags show you instantly what kind of dining experience a restaurant offers — without clicking through to their website or calling.
You'll see tags like (select all that apply):
Why this matters: Know before you go. See at a glance whether it's a sit-down restaurant with servers, a quick counter-service spot, or takeout only.
Like fanciness levels, users can suggest corrections to keep service types accurate and up-to-date.
Our proprietary matching algorithm analyzes everyone's taste profiles to find the sweet spot where the whole group is happy.
Here's how it works:
The result? No one gets stuck with something they hate, and the group finds options everyone can enjoy.
Searching solo? The algorithm works just as well for you — surfacing restaurants that match your personal taste profile.
Who's Hungry supports 90+ cuisines organized into a hierarchy of regional groups. View the full cuisine list
In the Preferences screen, cuisines are organized into parent groups (like "East Asian" or "Latin American") and individual cuisines beneath them. Setting a parent group's slider automatically sets all its children to the same rating — great for quickly expressing broad tastes. You can then fine-tune any individual cuisine independently for a more tailored profile.
For example, setting "East Asian" to 5 will set Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Taiwanese all to 5. Then you could bump Sushi up to 6 or bring Korean down to 3 — whatever matches your taste.
Dietary badges are colored labels that help you quickly identify restaurants that meet specific dietary needs or culinary styles.
Available badges:
Badges appear right on the restaurant card, so you can see dietary options at a glance without clicking through to menus.
Note: Badge data comes from user reports and admin verification. Help us improve by reporting dietary options you know about!
Group size labels give you a quick read on how many people a restaurant can comfortably accommodate — so you don't show up with nine people to a place that seats four.
The four tiers:
How the labels work: Each tier represents the maximum a place can handle — smaller groups are always welcome at higher-capacity venues. A "Up to Large Group" restaurant is just as happy to seat a couple as a party of fifteen.
You can filter your search results by group size after searching, making it easy to narrow down to places that fit your party.
⚠️ Important: Group size information is crowd-sourced and may not reflect current seating arrangements or policies. Always confirm capacity with the restaurant directly before visiting — especially for large parties. Many places that can accommodate big groups require a reservation or advance notice, and some larger venues may need to be booked out entirely for private events. When in doubt, call ahead.
That's it! The whole process takes less than 5 minutes for your first search.
Just add their email addresses when you add fellow diners on the search page. They'll automatically receive an email invite with a link to join your session.
Once they create their account and build their taste profile, they can join any search with you.
Note: Email invites are automated. Replies to those emails won't reach us — use the contact form below for support.
There's a strong chance that the invite went to spam. If that's not it, try adding them again.

It's especially helpful if you're indecisive or tired of scrolling through hundreds of options on Google Maps.
A live session is a shared search where everyone sees the same results in real-time. When you search with fellow diners, you're all working from the same list.
Key features:
Sessions automatically expire after 24 hours (or at the end of an event day), so you start fresh each time.
Yes! When you search with fellow diners, you can name your session (like "Saturday lunch with the girls") and optionally set an event date.
Event sessions:
Quick sessions: If you skip the event date, it's a "quick session" that expires after 24 hours — great for spontaneous group decisions.
When your group has made a decision, the host can crown a restaurant as The Pick by clicking the trophy icon.
What happens:
Changed your mind? The host can click the trophy again to unmark the restaurant.
Yes! You can participate in multiple sessions simultaneously — perfect when you're planning several events or coordinating with different groups.
How it works:
Example: Planning both a work lunch for Tuesday and a family dinner for Saturday? Create both sessions and switch between them to manage each one.
These options serve different purposes:
Tip: If you're the host but need to step away, you can transfer hosting duties to another member before leaving.
Vetoing is how your group narrows down options together. Click the X button on any restaurant to mark it as "not in the mood."
How vetoes work:
Note: Once the host crowns a restaurant as "The Pick," it cannot be vetoed until it's unmarked.

Several reasons this might happen:
About filters: Restaurants that don't have a specific filter assignment (price level, service type, etc.) are always included in your results by default. This prevents a restaurant from being overlooked just because it hasn't been tagged yet — untagged locations are simply never filtered out.
Tip: If you suspect a restaurant is mislabeled, try enabling all price levels to see if it appears. You can also broaden your search radius to see more results.
Important: Be sure to click Save Preferences before leaving the page!
